Have you ever wanted a blues exchange that let you pick what music styles you wanted to hear at any particular moment? Have you ever wanted a workshop that let you have choices to devote a day to your choice of a blues style, not just be stuck with whatever’s on the class list for beginners? Have you ever just wanted to experience a dance event? Well now you can have all of that in one event in Michigan's capital city, Lansing!

B.Y.O.B. is about having choices. Not even a single venue is enough, we’re pulling out the stops and having two venues running simultaneously within the same block of Lansing's historic REO Town distrcit. At A.A. Creative Corridor, the bi-weekly home of Sugar House Blues and Sugar House Swing, we’ll have top notch DJs from near and far to play some of your old and new favorite tunes. Just 300 feet north is our second venue, The Robin Theatre, with a perfect setup for live music including a stage and lights for a concert-like setting. Both venues will also feature a six hour long workshop on Saturday in two very different styles of blues. Need a break from dancing? 150 feet south of the Corridor is the Reo Town Pub with plenty of refreshments to go around. Next door to The Robin Theatre is Good Truckin’ Diner, and next door to the Reo Town Pub is Saddleback BBQ, so you don’t even need to get in your car for food. That’s two venues, two workshops, live music, your favorite DJs, a friendly bar, and two restaurants, all within 500 ft of one another! Even better? Street parking is plentiful and free, and we have easy access on and off the highway.

Is that not enough? How about a late night of dancing under the stars next to a bonfire with hot mulled cider? We'll be doing two late nights, one on Friday and one on Saturday. (And yes, we have a rain plan to take the house party inside on freshly refinished hard wood floors.)

Workshop passes (one workshop track of your choice, access to both dances both nights, Sunday brunch): $75

Dance passes (no workshop, access to both dances both nights, Sunday brunch): $55

Lesson passes (workshop only, no dances): $40

All passes are single tier (no Early Bird savings), BUT there are only so many passes available.

Red Tail Ring is the Americana roots duo of Michael Beauchamp and Laurel Premo. Whether rendering a traditional tune or one of their original compositions, the duo infuses each song with musical imagination, haunting harmonies and instrumental artistry on fiddle, guitar, banjo, mandolin, jawharp and plain-old foot stomping. Since 2009, Red Tail Ring has released four albums, and traveled increasingly farther in their musical ramblings - performing throughout the Midwest, Northeast and Southeast, as well as touring in Denmark, Sweden and Germany.

The Corn Potato String Band has earned high praise in traditional American music, keeping old time fiddle and banjo music from a one-way trip to the dustbins of history. Theirs is a story of struggle, hard knocks and triumph. Essentially unable to cope with modern life, the members of this band are outcasts of society who survive by playing the lost music of the flatlands where they were raised. The Corn Potatos have delighted audiences with their driving fiddle tunes and harmonious singing across the US, Canada, Europe, Mexico, and India. They are all multi-instrumentalists dedicated to continuing the music and dance traditions of the Central and Southern US. In addition to being champion fiddlers they play banjo, guitar, bass and mandolin and deftly handle many different antiquated styles including ballads, “ho-downs,” country “rags” and southern gospel, specializing in twin fiddling and double banjo tunes.

Sugar House - Oct 21 All Soul NightSugar House - Oct 21 All Soul Night

AA Creative Corridor
1133 S Washington Ave
Lansing, MI  48910 Map

Our first week after BYOB, we'll be doing some different and hopefully a whole lot of fun! Oct 21 will be All Soul Night... as in, nothing but Soul, Funk, and touch of Disco (think KC and the Sunshine Band but NOT ABBA) all night long. Since this is also our last blues night before Halloween, feel free to come in costume.

As always, we'll have an 8 pm FREE beginner lesson, followed by a 9 pm open dance for $5, and we now accept cash and all major credit cards. Parking is free, on the street and in lots, and plentiful.

For those who are new to Sugar House, blues dance is a genre of jazz vernacular dance that takes elements of West African dance that were passed down by slaves in the American South and Western partnered dances (especially tango!). While it was developed to go along with blues music, the dance fits many genres of music including jazz, r&b, disco, hip hop, and modern pop. On any given night at Sugar House you're likely to hear most, if not all, of those genres. Blues dance has been as influential on modern dance forms (such as hip hop) as blues music has been on modern American music.

We are a social dance group, so we encourage people to change partners throughout the night. Even if you come alone, you'll find many songs to dance to with many smiling faces! No prior experience is necessary, and there's no need to invest in special dance shoes.

Sugar House Swing - October 22Sugar House Swing - October 22

AA Creative Corridor
1133 S Washington Ave
Lansing, MI  48910 Map

**PLEASE NOTE! This month we'll be on the 4th Saturday of the month to stay inline with Sugar House Blues. (Oct 1 is a Saturday, which is what threw off the rotation.)

First up at 8 pm is a FREE beginner lesson, and we'll start with East Coast Swing for the first few months. At 9 pm is a $5 open dance. Our goal is to play music that is suitable for both East Coast and Lindy Hop that ranges from classic standards, to modern radio hits, and everything in between.

Please Note: Sugar House now accepts all major credit cards.

**IMPORTANT!: September 16 - 17 is the Michigan Blues Festival in Lansing. Anyone interested in a FREE music festival with amazing performances (including some swingable jump blues) should check out www.oldtownbluesfest.com/

For those who are unfamiliar, Swing Dance is a category of American Jazz Vernacular Dance that started in New York City's Savoy Ballroom with the Lindy Hop in the 1930s, growing out of other dances such as Blues and the Charleston. Originally primarily an African American dance, the Lindy Hop grew in popularity quickly, become the dance of the 1940s and spawning the closely related dances East Coast Swing, Jitterbug, and Jive as Swing became acceptable in predominately white communities. Today all types of Swing enjoy a world-wide popularity.

We are a social dance group, so we encourage people to change partners throughout the night. Even if you come alone, you'll find many songs to dance to with many smiling faces! No prior experience is necessary, and there's no need to invest in special dance shoes, though for Swing we do suggest flat shoes without aggressive tread (a Ked or All-Star style sneaker is good).

"If you don't already know of Davey O. and his music, perhaps it's time. This Buffalo, NY based songwriter has embarked on a decade-plus journey of growth, discovery, joy, and heartbreak that has resulted in a collection of justly-earned, highly introspective songs, - pure Americana written for the thinking person that is not of the social and political consciousness, but drawn from the deep well of experience and human emotion - no hackneyed story lines, no insincere polish, just an unflinching poet's look at life. The characters woven seamlessly into stories of which the song itself becomes the soundtrack for the movie playing inside the listener's head."
